You Have Enough Time, But There Isn’t a Moment to Spare

Dear steward,

“If only I had more time.”

How often have you thought that? Some years ago, I was struck through the heart when I heard a preacher say that’s an accusation against God.

The preacher helped me see that when I complained against time, I was complaining against the God who set its boundaries. I was complaining that He had given me an impossible task. But that’s not true. God has given us precisely enough time to do what He’s called us to do with these lives.

When I’m overburdened and exhausted, my complaint should be against myself for not having clearer priorities, or not having said “no” when I knew I should. And if the busyness could not have been avoided, I should be taking hold of God’s power and promise to stand up under any trial (1 Corinthians 10:13). But a complaint against time is an indirect accusation against the God of providence.

In this week’s essay, I share the encouraging truth that God has given us enough time! And that should give us both peace and urgency in how we live and steward that time.

“You do not have time for every ambition, every opportunity, or every request others may make of you. But when it comes to the purpose for which you’ve been put on this earth? Yes, the clock is ticking. But you have enough time to do what God has called you to. “

Weekly Word

“It is in vain that you rise up early and go late to rest, eating the bread of anxious toil; for he gives to his beloved sleep.”
– Psalm 127:2

All of your best efforts have a limit. No matter how productive you become, you’ll be able to do it all. But God does not have limits. The type of productivity He wants from us is the kind that admits, “He is God, I am not.” This means greeting times of rest not as a necessary evil but as a blessed gift.
