THE ROUNDUP

The best links I found this week

The Complexity of Calling (8 mins)

Nicholas McDonald / The Bard Owl

McDonald provides a survey of the concept of calling in the Bible and explores three layers of calling.

  1. Calling is about who you are.
  2. Calling is about what you do.
  3. Calling is about God’s mission.

In a very basic sense, then, our calling is also about all of the responsibilities in life that God has assigned to us. If you were to take an inventory of everything you are responsible for: your home, job, neighborhood, family, friendships, etc, you would discover, in one sense, the situation to which you have been called.

When Time Management Was Easy (3 mins)

Cal Newport / Study Hacks

Newport looks at time management advice from the 50s and asks some very interesting questions about the way we work today.

Part of what’s shocking about this system is its finitude. In 2024, can you imagine fitting everything you need to do on a single list? Your email inbox alone could likely contribute several hundred items at any given moment.

The Busy Soul Learning to Wait for God (6 mins)

John Piper / Desiring God

I’m a doer. I’m always doing the next thing. I have a lot of energy. If I see something I need, or that others need, I get to work. And then I read a verse like this one in Isaiah: ‘No eye has seen a God besides you, who acts for those who wait for him’ (Isaiah 64:4)….What does waiting look like for an active person like me?”

WHATS NEW ON

Redeeming Productivity

The Power & The Pitfalls of Side Hustles (8 mins)

Starting a side project to make some extra cash can be tempting. But make sure you count the cost before jumping in with both feet.

Read, Listen, or watch on YouTube.
