I use a lot of apps to be more productive, but one shines above the rest.
This year I started using the Freedom app to help me fight distractions while I work and it’s been a game-changer for my focus.
Here’s how you can use Freedom to protect your focus…
But first, what is Freedom?
Freedom uses a VPN to temporarily block your network connection to websites & apps that steal your attention.
It takes self-control out of the equation.
Step 1: Add Freedom to Your Devices
One of my favorite things about Freedom is I can’t escape it by switching to a different device. It works on everything.
I have Freedom on my:
- Computer
- Phone
- Tablet
When I start a focus session, distractions are blocked EVERYWHERE.
Step 2: Create Your Block Lists
Freedom has predefined lists you can block. But you can customize them to your liking.
The big distractions I wanted to block were:
- Social Media
- YouTube
And, yes, this also blocks the app versions of these sites too!
Step 3: Create Your Routine
I use Freedom throughout the day to do 25-minute deep work sessions.
But my most important block of time each day is my morning routine. So, I’ve created a recurring routine that blocks everything until 7:00 am.
If I try and go on YouTube, Twitter, Facebook, or some other site or app on my list during a session, I’m met with this:
Step 4: Enjoy Freedom
Since I’ve started using Freedom I’ve
- Gotten more done each day
- Felt less frazzled
- Been more focused
As I said, it’s a game-changer for deep work.
I found Freedom so useful, that I purchased a lifetime plan.
But you can try Freedom for free to see if you like it.

Hi Reagan – I saw your 25 minute session reference. Do you a pomodoro technique?
Yes, I use the Pomodoro technique. Freedom can actually run the timers for you, but I like to use a physical egg timer. I talk about it in this Twitter thread: https://twitter.com/Reagantrose/status/1501559182717116417
